J.D. Mason Review of Slow Burn |
Your unique voice and style are what drew me into this novel and held me there, Ebony. This was one of those books that wouldn’t let me skim through it, because every word was like a brush stroke, completing the big picture, and if I missed a single word, I felt I missed something valuable.
The characters were all very well defined in their voices and in the narrative, which is hard to do, but crucial in my opinion. If the narrative can reflect who that character is, as well as the dialog, then that’s truly something special. This was particularly evident with Khalil. If I have one complaint, it’s that I missed him terribly while he was in that coma! I could feel the love and faith he had in his love for Sera, and it tore me up when I couldn’t more of that.
Your poetry was breathtaking, but then, you probably already know that. The book was funny, it was extremely romantic, and it moved at a good pace. Like I said, I tend to be a skimmer, because most books really don’t hold my interest. I think that’s because most writers don’t pay that much attention to the individual words. To me, each words is just a tiny piece of the puzzle and all of them should be carefully and thoughtfully placed. I think you did that.
Thank you.
J.D. Mason
